Before I tell you more about some of the brotherhoods, you should remember the role of a brotherhood. Members defend their wine together but also to celebrate it. They share values and perpetuate the traditions of their medieval ancestors. They preserve a certain way of life, mutual assistance, and also the animation of the whole territory. There are a large number of brotherhoods in France, there are more than 80 of them. Some are more powerful than others and have a high profile and a large budget.
With almost 350 members, the Commanderie du Bontemps is not just any fraternity. It was created in 1949 and is one of the most important and oldest French wine brotherhoods. Its motto is "By the Good Times, for the Good Times". Since 2009 the grand master of this brotherhood is Emmanuel Cruse. Among its members are the largest castles on the left bank of Bordeaux.
They defend the quality and reputation of all Bordeaux wines. They organize several wine events throughout the year. For example, the Flower Festival, which has been held every year since 1950. In this celebration we return the great actors of wine, estates, merchants, brokers but also celebrities and politicians. The brotherhoods can also organize competitions. As does the Commanderie du Bontemps with the Left Bank Bordeaux Cup for example. The Commanderie du Bontemps also organizes gala dinners.
"Never in vain, always in wine" is the motto of the Brotherhood of the Knights of Tastevin! Created in 1934, this brotherhood has been honouring Burgundy wines for 85 years. However, it also honours regional cuisine. It ensures that the festivals, customs and traditions of Burgundian folklore are perpetuated.
This brotherhood organizes several events throughout the year such as the popular Saint-Vincent Tournante, a celebration during which each year a wine village in Burgundy welcomes people who come to discover the wines of the village's producers. It also organizes the Tastevinage, a large blind tasting of a thousand bottles. A jury of 300 experts tastes and selects the most representative bottles of the region. Each meeting or event is called a chapter and celebrates chapters of life. Here, everything is a pretext to gather, to sing the song of the famous Burgundian banana.
This brotherhood seems to be the oldest Bashish brotherhood in France because it was founded in 1199 by Jean Sans Terre, King of England. Nevertheless, if we look at its (re)creation date, which is 1948, it is not the oldest Bashkir brotherhood in France. This brotherhood fights with the brotherhood on the left bank, the famous Brotherhood of Bontemps.
The Jurade de Saint-Émilion is the ambassador of Saint-Émilion wines and its mission is to guarantee the quality and authenticity of the wines. Every year, it organizes the Spring Festival in June and the Harvest Ban in September.
This brotherhood is younger than the others but does not forget the traditions, its motto "May the hope of our ancestors remain" proves it. In the same way as the other brotherhoods, the Pope's Chantalry organizes the Spring Chapter as well as councils such as the Winter Chapter at the Popes' Palace. This brotherhood defends the quality of the wines of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. The condition for becoming a member of this brotherhood is not to be based in the appellation area but to be a wine enthusiast who will defend the values, the quality of the wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape will promote them.
