This week Nicolas Dornier talks to us about love. More original than the usual Valentine's Day wishes, this oenologist tells us about his passion for the Maury vineyards with his wife Christine, and the creation of the "Clos des vins d'Amour" with his family.
Love at Le Clos starts with my meeting with Christine at Maury in Roussillon. She is also an oenologist and suggested that my brother Christian and his wife Laurence and I should join forces to take over the vineyard from his grandfather. In 2004, we set off on a 10-hectare adventure, with no buildings, no staff and no equipment, as the vines were farmed on a rental basis. With a lot of elbow grease and a family more than invested in the creation of the Clos des Vins d'Amour, our estate took shape.
"Domaine Dornier" would have been too easy. For the name, we preferred to distance ourselves from boring habits and refer to the love that unites us in this family adventure. This communication bias also reflects our wines, which are more modern and spontaneous than classic competition wines.
In twelve years, the Clos des Vins d'Amour has enjoyed a certain success as we have gone from 6,000 bottles to over 70,000 bottles sold all year round. The estate is also growing and we are now 25 hectares where Denis Grébul is the manager. How then can we continue to do things with love?
With Christine we always follow very closely the picking, the harvest and the vinification. Our children also collaborate on the development of the estate. When I talk about development today, it is not in terms of surface area but more in terms of supply. For example, we will soon obtain organic conversion for the entire vineyard. We also wish to increase the value of the estate, diversify our distribution networks and develop event activities around our wines.
The Clos des Vins d'Amour is composed of three islands, which benefit from three different exposures. Grenache (white, grey and black), Carignan, Syrah, or Mourvèdre... the grape varieties are as varied as the characters of our bottles. There is youth in Idylle (a feminine, dynamic and refined white wine) or Flirt (a rosé made of pep and substance). Maturity is found for example in Un Baiser - a blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre that is uncommon and appreciated by people looking for terroir.
In the end, we can modestly say that our wines appeal to any age group. And this is precisely what we like at Clos des Vins d'Amour: sharing the love of wine with everyone, whether you are an amateur or an initiate!
