Portaits Vignerons - Le château de Nages crée son premier vin effervescent dans les Costières de Nîmes - Les Grappes

Château de Nages creates its first sparkling wine in the Costières de Nîmes region

Château de Nages has been in the Gassier family for 4 generations. Each of them has brought their personal touch, allowing the estate to evolve among the references of the Costières de Nîmes appellation. Inventive and always looking to the future, Michel and Tina are releasing this year the first sparkling wine from Château de Nages.

The Château de Nages aims at quality in the Costières de Nîmes appellation.

Brice Chevalier has been working at Château de Nages for 2 years as sales manager in France. "When I arrived, the estate was export oriented. Michel and Tina wanted to bring the wines back to France, which is our priority market today," he explains. This commercial strategy is part of a more global plan put in place by Michel. When he took over his father's castle in 1992, he decided to change his strategy. "The aim was to go to the top of the Costières de Nîmes basket to be a leader in the appellation", says Brice Chevalier.

The domain then develops more qualitative projects. The wine, until then sold in bulk, is bottled at the property. Michel quickly understood that making good wine meant better maintenance of the soil, the vines and the elimination of chemicals. Unofficially, he started very early to do organic farming. Then in 2008, he finally applied for certification. For Michel, the organic farming label shows his respect for the land, the environment and his desire to make better wines that express the terroir, without make-up and in complete transparency," Brice says.

Château de Nages opens up to sulphite-free wines

Michel and Tina also decide to develop the range of wines. "By deciding to return to the French market, they had to adapt their offer," Brice points out.The Liberty range was born out of the desire to offer a wine with a fruity aroma, with moderate levels of sulphites and alcohol and in organic farming. "Our natural wine in the range came here a bit by chance," Brice recalls. "We had a vintage that did very well and we wanted to try to make sulphite-free. It's only the first year that we've produced this bottle but it's a success and I think we're going to continue". Always carried by this breath and enthusiasm, Michel and Tina continue to learn, to try, to innovate. This year, they release the first sparkling wine from the Château de Nages. "It's Michel's desire to have an organic bubble and to be a winemaker", smiles Brice.

The terroir must express itself in the wines of Château de Nages.

For several days now, the winegrowers have been bringing in the 2019 grapes and have started the fermentation of a vintage that looks very promising. "We are on the same terroirs as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with pebbles and a lot of red clay. Michel has done a lot of work to bring minerality to the wines, thanks to the limestone of our soils. At the same time, we are fortunate to benefit from a sea breeze which brings a little freshness to our very sunny wines", explains Brice Chevalier, who concludes : "Michel has a motto that I love and that makes the château what it is today: you don't inherit a piece of land, you borrow it from your children. And his children are lucky, they are going to take over a vineyard in a very healthy and impeccable state ".
