South Rhone Valley Wine Route

The Coteaux du Tricastin production area is located on the Wine Road of the Southern Rhône. Located south of Montélimar, on the east bank of the Rhône, from Montélimar to Saint Paul Trois Châteaux, this magnificent region will be the first to offer you a taste of the Mediterranean, accompanied by its infinite smells, sounds and colours. A great diversity of wines can be found there due to the many types of mixed soils as well as the varied climates.

The stages of our Southern Rhône Valley Wine Route :

  1. Chardon Bleu Domain
  2. Château de Vérone
  3. Rouge-Bleu Domain
  4. Mayard Vineyards

Continue your route from Orange to Vaison La Romaine. Apart from being one of the best routes for buying good quality Rhône wines, the Indigo Trail will take you on a journey through time. In Orange, you will see the heyday of the Roman Empire: the city will first welcome you with a view of the triumphal arch, then you will observe the splendour of a Roman open-air theatre. In Bollène, the Middle Ages were at the forefront with the Roman period. Don't even try to leave town before visiting the Troglodytic Village of Barry; a series of underground houses that were inhabited from the Neolithic period until the beginning of the 20th century.

You will finally be able to finish your tour in Avignon; Avignon is close to many wine roads and a large tourist centre. On this road, which goes just north-east of the city, you can visit the large wine-producing villages of Châteauneuf du Pape, Courthézon and Sorgues. Each of these villages is home to large estates as well as cooperatives to visit and purchase quality wines.

Avignon is today the capital of the Côtes du Rhône. It comes alive every summer for a theatre festival that nurtures the soul and the belly!

The must-see estates of the Southern Rhône

Chardon Bleu Domain

Emmanuel and his wife's farm is located on the east of the Grignan-les-Adhémar AOC area, in the southern Rhône Valley. Their vines are planted between 350 and 450 metres above sea level at the entrance to a valley, in a real Mistral corridor. This configuration offers them very aromatic wines, but often marked by an astonishing freshness for wines from the Rhone Valley, and by notes of spices that are very present in red wines (pepper).

Two winemakers who are passionate about the richness and complexity of the terroir, and who are always on the lookout for new tastes in their wines!

Château de Vérone

Built in the 13th century in the middle of the Rhone Valley, the Château de Vérone extends over 48 hectares from the communes of Vinsobres to Mirabel-aux-Baronnies. The vines are almost exclusively planted with Syrah.

From vintage to vintage, the cultivation of the vine is becoming more and more sustainable while respecting the wine-growing traditions. Today, the Pélissier family is the 4th generation of winegrowers in the family to run the estate. But the history of the area goes back to the 13th century, when a fortified house located below was already the seat of an agricultural estate built on the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa (at least that's what the legend says!).

Rouge-Bleu Domain

Thanks to their travels abroad and in Australia, the owners of the Domaine Rouge-Bleu do not hesitate to harmonize modern techniques combined with a French style. On this estate located in Sainte Cécile les Vignes, between Orange and Vaison la Romaine, light and fruity wines are produced, not far from the great appellations of the southern Rhône Valley such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape or Gigondas.

Don't hesitate to come and spend the night at the domain and enjoy the breathtaking views of the South Rhone region!

Mayard Vineyards

The Mayard estate was created by Gratien Mayard at the end of the 19th century. Hesitating to leave for the United States following the phylloxera crisis, he decided to stay for the love of the terroir to rebuild his vineyard vine by vine. Today, it is still the Mayard family who have been managing the estate located in Châteauneuf-du-Pape for 6 generations. The vineyard extends over 43 hectares of vines with 2 main islets, one of 21 hectares located in the south of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation on the place called "Grand Coulet", and the second of 8 hectares located in the east, on the famous "Crau" plateau.

This organic estate offers several vintages of Châteauneuf du Pape and Côtes du Rhône and will not fail to impress you with its red wines which have been awarded by the "Revue du Vin de France"!
