Fleurie is a French commune, located in the Rhône department.
The History of Fleurie
The site of Fleurie, named Floriacum in the medieval charters, was occupied as early as the year 1000 when the Abbey of Arpayé settled on its territory. This abbey was directly dependent on that of Cluny, which was very flourishing at that time. It is located at the bottom of the Chaffangeons, a hamlet already populated and where the culture of the vine existed.
The village took its shape in the 19th century. The population increases, the wine-growing activity is reinforced. Fleurie is boosted by the creation of a market, festivals and the officialization of the "Fête des Conscrits" which brings together every ten years the natives of the same decade. The origin dates back to an order from Louis XIV asking the village to provide 50 men by drawing lots to go to military service. But it was also the century of the great diseases of the vine.
In the 20th century a new town hall and its park was acquired in 1934 in the castle of Monsieur Pondevaux. In 1927 a cooperative cellar opens in Fleurie. It is this century which will give a reputation to the Beaujolais crus as well as the opening to tourism.
