It should be known that our Gaul ancestors used to make wine in Jura… Today, it has become a paradise for small exploitations and united cooperatives. If you’re in need of some authenticity, there’s no need to go further! The appellation extends over a little more than 1800 hectares, between Burgundy and Switzerland. Due to its geographical situation, Jura produces wines that are very unique in the country, some would even say atypical:
straw” wine (a wine with notes of honeyed and sweet fruits, hazelnut and a good balance of acidity), “yellow” wine (a dry and aromatic wine with a taste of hazelnut, and sometimes spicy notes of turmeric, ginger and cardamone) and Cremant of Jura (a sparkling wine made with at least 50% of Chardonnay) for example. It is a region with a cool climate, clay, limestone soils, and a lot of fossil material from the Jurassic era, hence the name of the region…! White wines of the Jura are mainly made of blends that include Savagnin (star of the region with a 20% vine population) and Chardonnay. As for red wines, they use grape varieties such as Trousseau, Poulsard and Pinot Noir. At the nose, white wines that are of a beautiful finesse are intense on peaches and apples, with some notes of vines. Red wines have aromas of candied red fruits and spices, including cinnamon, with a nice length.
With a very rich heritage, the Jura is mainly known for its lakes, its forests, its rivers and in other words, for its natural landscapes! Discover the Hedgehog Cascades, magnificent waterfalls to watch along a walk in the forest. The village of Baume-les-Messieurs is also a must-see. Ranked among the most beautiful villages in France, it is nestled in the heart of an exceptional natural setting. Visit the caves of Baume, its imperial abbey and enjoy a unique landscape. The magnificent Jura lakes located on the east of Lons le Saunier, can be admired from easily accessible lookouts. In the summer, Lake Vouglans offers a large number of outdoor activities; swimming, paddling, kayaking, etc. This is the seaside resort of the Jura. As a couple, with friends or family, this place is perfect. Do not leave the Jura without having discovered Salins-les-Bains. In Salins-les-Bains, you can experience the benefits of the natural salty waters of the spa. You can also admire a UNESCO World Heritage-listed monument, La Grande Saline.
