Established since 1964 on this 20 hectare property located in Haut-Médoc, the TOUCHAIS family strives to bring as much character and elegance to its wine as Victor Louis (Architect of the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux) did by building the estate's Chartreuse in the 18th century. Lionel, 3rd generation, oenologist by training, has been technical director of the estate since 2005. To perpetuate the tradition and in a permanent concern for quality, we carry out manual harvesting every year.
Château Balac has known great owners, such as Sieur Fraimont de Josset in the 17th century, Baron du Breuil, who was one of the most important lords of the 18th century or Mr Luetkens. The latter had the house restored by the greatest architect in Bordeaux, Victor Louis. And it was in 1964 that Mr. Touchais, a winegrower in Anjou, bought this estate where there is not much left because the vines have disappeared and the buildings are in ruins. Luc, his son, took over the management of the estate in 1973. He restores it and gradually replants it to arrive at a cultivable area of 19 hectares. Then his son, Lionel, an oenologist, took over the responsibility of managing the vineyard and vinification in 2005. Sustainability is assured and Balac is regaining a new lease of life.
I fully ensure the vinification according to the traditional method with temperature control for maximum extraction of aromas and tannins. The ageing is done in French oak barrels, some of which are renewed each year according to the characteristics of each vintage. The vinification of our grapes aims to produce elegant and fruity wines:
- Gold Medal at the Paris Competition for the 2014 vintage and Gold Medal at the Bordeaux Competition for the 2015-
90/10 score for the 2014
addition, we are present in many Guides (Hachette, Gilbert & Gaillard, Dussert Gerber), which reward the follow-up of its quality. The estate enjoys a privileged location as it is located on the main Bordeaux-Soulac road near the Grands Crus.
