Grand Cru Classé in 1855 in the Sauternes & Barsac appellation, Château Caillou has been a family property for over 100 years!
Château Caillou is located on the high plateau of Barsac, where we find the oldest and most renowned crus of this appellation. On a clay-limestone subsoil with asteria, covered with a layer of clayey sand and dotted with beautiful gravel on the surface, our wines are distinguished by their delicate aromas. We produce typically Barsac wines, wines that reflect great freshness and minerality, wines that are slightly less opulent.
On a vineyard of 18 hectares, including 13 hectares in one piece around the Château, Sémillon is king. We produce our Sauternes and Crémant de Bordeaux only with Sémillon, and we keep all the freshness of Sauvignon Blanc for our dry white wine. The vineyard, whose vines are on average 50 years old, is made up of first choice grape varieties and rootstocks and is planted sparingly to ensure the maintenance of the vineyard. We are currently managing our vineyard using sustainable agriculture and we are working in 2021 to obtain the High Environmental Value level 3 label.
In 1909, Joseph Ballan bought the property at auction. His only daughter, Reine Ballan, continued her father's work with passion and devotion, alongside her husband Joseph Bravo. In 1997, their daughter Marie José took over the property with the help of her husband, Michel Pierre. Today, we, Sébastien and Jean-Noël Pierre, proudly represent the fourth generation of the Château Caillou family.
Château Caillou is above all a family story in which my brother and I were able to develop a strong love for the vine that our predecessors passed on to us. A passion for our terroir of Barsac constantly pushes us to reflect on the best way to produce our precious wines.
Our wines are full of freshness, a beautiful balance and adaptable to different types of gastronomy (Asian, Oriental...) they do not only go well with foie gras even if this agreement remains a classic!
