Château Caillou is the 2nd Grand Cru Classé in 1855 in the Sauternes & Barsac appellation. The parcels are located in the commune of Barsac, renowned for the great finesse and freshness of its Sauternes thanks to a sileux subsoil of clay and limestone with asteries, under a layer of clayey sand dotted with pebbles. 70% of Semillon and 30% of Sauvignon make up this magnificently exposed vineyard.
The unique magic that works in the vineyards of Sauternes with its world-famous noble rot is sublimated here by the know-how of Château Caillou.
A family property for more than 100 years, Jospeh Ballan bought the property by auction following a publication in the local newspaper, the castle belonged at that time to Mr Louis Sarraute.
To this day Marie-José Pierre, granddaughter of Joseph Ballan and Michel Pierre, her husband, are the current owners and pass on the know-how to their two sons Sébastien and Jean-Noël. The latter gradually
took over the vineyard to bring it towards a more sustainable
viticulture.
"We are proud to be among the last family properties of the Grand Crus Classé de Sauternes".
Château Caillou is above all a family story in which my brother and I were able to develop a strong love for the vine that our predecessors passed on to us. A passion for our terroir of Barsac constantly pushes us to reflect on the best way to produce our precious wines.
Our wines are full of freshness, a beautiful balance and adaptable to different types of gastronomy (Asian, Oriental...) they do not only go well with foie gras even if this agreement remains a classic!
