Beginning in the 12th century, the history of the Domaine d'Astros has seen a succession of Knights Templar and Knights of Malta, then a family from Marseille, the Maurel family for 9 generations. Bernard Maurel, 88 years old, married to Dominique Maurel and father of four children, is the current owner of the Domaine d'Astros. An esteemed banker, he is Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the private bank Martin-Maurel, founded in Marseille, and in the 1970s he undertook a genuine modernisation of the Astros estate.Since 2010, his son, Bruno Maurel, a priest at the Jean-Joseph Allemand Youth Work Institute in Marseille, has been managing the Astros estate, assisted by two oenologists, Laure Ambroise-Habasque and Nathalie Vidal-Dupré, two women who are committed to viticulture that respects its ecosystem. HVE 3 since 2017, the 2020 vintage will benefit from organic certification. "There have always been vines and cellars in Astros... "The first vines on the estate date back to the time of the Templars. The terroir of Astros is characterised by its diversity, which brings great complexity to the wines. This aromatic richness is accentuated by a wide choice of grape varieties adapted to the different plots. Grenache, Cinsault, Carignan, Rolle, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Caladoc, Merlot, Marselan, Muscat & Mourvèdre.
The Astros estate is also known for its traditional apple picking in Autumn, in the 10 hectares of orchards. It was used as a film location for Yves Robert's famous Château de Ma Mère in 1990, and more recently for Reem Kherici's D-Day in 2017.
