Château de Rougeon has been a family estate for 6 generations, bicentenary, located on the Côte Chalonnaise in the commune of Bissey Sous Cruchaud. One of the oldest wine-growing villages in Burgundy. Château de Rougeon has been in existence for more than 200 years, and the vines surrounding the château, on the tops of the hills, enjoy an optimal exposure, terroir and climate. This ideal combination allows the grape varieties to fully assert their identities.
In 1839, Claude Ozanon acquired Château de Rougeon. His son Charles Ozanon is a world-renowned botanist. He planted, experimented and worked with American grape varieties after the invasion of phylloxera on shoots from the estate. Charles' son, Henri, creator of the Appellations d'origine, took root at the Château. his grandson Joseph Bouchard, co-director of the Bouchard Père & Fils family wine house, took over the management of the estate in 1980 and Dominique Bouchard has been at the head of the estate. From that date on, he continued to contribute to the estate. Between the modernization of equipment, the planting of new vines and the implementation of environmental rigour, the estate has undergone a real renewal. Today, the different grape varieties can fully reflect the diversity of the terroirs, from coarse sand on granitic rocks to clayey-limestone marls. The vintages are therefore the best way to discover the terroir, the Burgundy grape varieties and the personality of the winegrower!
When Dominique took over the estate, the vines had not been pruned for more than 2 years, the barns had no doors left and the brambles were trying to enter through the windows. He and his wife had to clear and replant. Today the estate is more than 10 hectares, 4 grape varieties are planted. These are Aligoté, Chardonnay, Pinot and Gamay.
