Château La Villatade is located about ten minutes from Carcassonne in the foothills of the Montagne Noire on an exceptional terroir of schist, marl and limestone. Our Red and Rosé wines are made from Syrah and Grenache noir, or Merlot, our White from Sauvignon and Vermentino.
In 1975, the estate still had nearly 130 hectares of vines and produced enormous volumes of wine, given the old vats still present on the site. In 2016 the vineyard was only 11 hectares. That's when my wife Sophie and I took over the estate. After 30 years in new technologies, we wanted to get closer to nature and the land and fell under the charm of this magnificent wine estate surrounded by woods, garrigues and olive trees. We wanted our vineyard to conform to the principles of biodynamic viticulture: a reasoned, clean and environmentally conscious viticulture, worked in a sustainable way. The conversion takes time but we have got into the rhythm and since last year the estate is HVE certified. We have also carried out major renovation projects on the existing buildings for agri-tourism and wine tourism, as well as the complete renovation of the winery.
The former owners had not made any bottles for many years. When we took over the estate, we found ourselves faced with a real problem: no bottles, so a range of wines to create, and no customers, so our wines had to be able to keep for as long as it took to find enough customers to drink them... Result: our red wines were made to be kept for at least 7 to 8 years. Some of them can be aged for 15 years or more in your cellar. But they are all ready to be drunk when we put them on sale!
