The Haguenin and Schmid families took the opportunity to buy Château l'Escarderie in 2015, located in the Fronsac appellation, on land of the same order as the best wines of Saint-Emilion. By conviction, we immediately asked for conversion to organic farming, this label was obtained in 2018. Our 5 ha are grouped around a 19th century cellar, equipped with gravity (electric pumps were unknown at the time of its construction!). Our vines (Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec) are located on a hillside with a beautiful view of the Dordogne valley. We produce our wines according to tradition, with as few inputs as possible: manual harvesting, careful sorting, fermentation with indigenous yeasts. But we also have our little secrets: maturing partially in amphoras for our first wine, using draught horses when relevant, etc. Closely followed by an oenologist, our wines reflect our terroir and its unspoilt nature. Bottled at the château, they are distinguished by a low sulphite content and are as close as possible to a natural wine!"

Our story

Summer 2015: hot! And we had planted 2 ha of vines... These young plants needed to be watered twice a week, by hand! This work made us so thirsty that we decided to make a rosé wine, light and pleasant to drink. The "Summertime de Château Escarderie" was born. Autumn 2017: Thomas Haguenin, our official winemaker, has an idea: the mixed vinification of barrels and amphoras! The first vintage, Château l'Escarderie 2016, is now on sale. And it continues: Thomas wants to experiment with a breeding exclusively in amphoras, like the old Greeks, what. We look forward to the result....

Other little stories

Can a vineyard replace a fundamental research laboratory? This was the question Walter, one of the shareholders of the "Escarderie" project and a former researcher, was asking himself. The answer was "no", but there are enormous possibilities of application for a scientist... From modern filtration techniques to the reintroduction of bats on the estate, our Walter gives free rein to his ideas (sometimes quite eccentric, see Professor foldinge?), but quite original, we must admit!
