Since 1880, Château Saint-Jean-Lez-Durance has been producing wines with the AOP Pierrevert and IGP Haute-Provence appellations on 33 hectares of land in the heart of Haute-Provence, not far from the famous Gorges du Verdon and the Luberon massif. It is also here, that for 5 generations, the Herbes family has been passionately cultivating its vines with southern grape varieties, giving nobility and character to the estate's vintages.
Rich of many terroirs, clay-limestone or safre hillsides, gravel or silt terraces, Château Saint-Jean lez Durance offers a great diversity of wines that have made its reputation. As the custodian of a rare historical heritage, Jean-Guillaume and Constance d'Herbès are committed to preserving the fruit of their ancestors' work by adopting an organic farming approach (organic certification in 2016) and "Active" organic farming (use of compost, winter planting in the vineyards, respect for the lunar calendar).
Château Saint-Jean-Lez-Durance has been owned by the Herbes family since 1754, on the stony ground so dear to poets and writers such as Magnan, Herman Hesse, Diesbach and Jean Giono, who easily admitted a "weakness" for the wines of the estate, the oldest in the region.
This property owes its creation to an ancestor of the family who took the crazy gamble of domesticating the Durance River, then known to be indomitable because of its violent floods. He then built dikes around the property. It was only later, in 1880, that Henri d'Herbès decided to convert the farm into a wine estate. Then his grandson, Jean d'Herbès, driven by the desire to promote the quality of the Haute-Provence terroir, worked to create the Pierrevert Appellation and develop the family estate.
Today, it is Jean-Guillaume and Constance, surrounded by their three children, who put their know-how at the service of making generous, fresh and fruity wines. It is indeed after having given up their Parisian life that the family has returned to the family lands of Haute-Provence, and works with energy and passion to offer you a varied range of rosé, red and white wines, regularly rewarded in national and international competitions. In addition, in order to develop their terroir and heritage, they have decided to switch to organic farming.
Jean-Guillaume and Constance choose the names of their vintages based on the historical heritage of Haute-Provence. Thus, the terroir of Pimayon ("Pic Major" in the Provençal language) refers to the high point; the vintage "Platanes" refers to the century-old trees that surround the vines from which the wine of this vintage is made; the vintage "Quatre Reines" refers to the prestigious Demoiselles de Provence who grew up at the foot of the Saint-Maime rock.
