Located in the heart of the volcanic soil of Puy de Dôme, Clos Luern is a story of passion. The passion of this multifaceted terroir with incredible potential. It is on two hectares that this small farm tries to make the most of the living soil on which old Gamay Noir and Gamay d'Auvergne centenarians are planted for 1 hyper-densitary hectare with slopes sometimes over 30%, and Chardonnay from a new plantation on a clayey-limestone soil of the pre-mountainous Limage.
After the manual harvest, the vinification is made from the most beautiful grapes, sorted in the vineyard and then in the cellar, using a precise oenological knowledge without adding any inputs. This precise and input-free vinification (temperature control and modern cellar) allows the maturation of pure juices that are representative of their terroir.
Finally, the ageing process is also oriented towards the quality and maintenance of the wines' personality with the use of terracotta amphorae and polymeric eggs ensuring micro-oxygenation and a gentle and elegant evolution of their organoleptic properties.
Is there a winegrower gene? Who knows... However, it was time to let it express itself and above all to let this family tradition express itself again. It was on land formerly planted with vines that I decided to revive this culture with a Chardonnay plantation that was to be the basis for setting up the estate.
But waiting 4 years before returning to the vineyard was unsustainable and that is why the estate has been enriched with old Gamay Noir and Gamay d'Auvergne vines able to produce grapes whose qualities I had not known until then. It is on a volcanic terroir to the east of Clermont Ferrand that these old vines flourish, giving wines with a strong identity brought by the land in which they evolve.
What could be better than terracotta amphorae for the breeding phase? They bring minerality and complexity to the wine without risking to deviate it as the wood of a barrel can. As you will have understood, at Clos Luern everything is done to create precise, clean and sincere wines, always closer to the terroir and keeping a finesse and a tension capable of letting them evolve over time.
