The Preissan Commandery is located in the heart of the Minervois, between Narbonne, Béziers and Carcassonne. The vines are planted on soubergues, the name given to the small hills in Languedoc. Although they are about ten kilometres from the sea, they are the first landforms on the land and benefit from sea spray. In addition, the Miocene sandy soil, which is found in Rioja and the Côte du Rhône, makes it a preferred terroir for Grenache and Mourvèdre. The presence of many islets of garrigue marks the wines aromatically.
Preissan is a very old domain! Many remains attest to this: Roman, Visigothic, the superb dovecote with its impressive number of cells, the hospital commandery, the neol Louis XIII castle which is reflected in a piece of water dug during the First World War, a period during which the building was used as a military hospital. Its geographical location between Béziers and Carcassonne, two Cathar strongholds, is certainly at the origin of the "donation" in 1193 of the property of Adhémar de Murviel to the benefit of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. The estate later became a property of Fonfroide Abbey and was finally diverted by the Abbot who was the commendatory of Frégoze to the benefit of his family, who remained owners until its sale in 1960 to Sophie Gely's grandfather
It was only after completing her pharmacy studies that Sophie Gely decided to start training as a winegrower. The click? The realization that this superb family estate can only survive if it is fully and professionally dedicated to it. In 1995, it was the first harvest. Then, it takes 4 years of acclimatization and handling of the estate before the first vintage is released in 1999. The favourable reception (Jean-Pierre Coffe talks about it in his show "Ça ne se bouffe pas, ça se mange") gives reason to Sophie Gély's long-term work and marks the beginning of a great adventure for the Commanderie!
