Domaine de Baronarques

Domaine de Baronarques

Since its acquisition in 1998 by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and her two sons, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild, Domaine de Baronarques has become a benchmark for Languedoc wines.

Anecdotes about the domain

At the estate, we harvest by hand! The grapes are harvested in 12 kg crates to be sorted and put into vats. For the reds, the ageing lasts 6 to 12 months. The family keeps the traditions of Bordeaux alive in this Languedoc vineyard. It is said that the wines are bottled on the estate or rather "bottled at the château" as we say in Bordeaux.

The domain's short story

The history of the estate is rich: its creation dates back to the 17th century. At the time, it was the Abbey of Saint-Polycarpe that farmed the land we cultivate today. After several successions of owners, Michel Tisseyre acquired the estate in 1875 and, with his family, worked to develop it. It was Michel who built this beautiful house in 1900 with its terrace and garden. Shortly before the beginning of the new millennium, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild bought the estate with her two sons. The family company took over the management of the estate. The estate was in need of numerous renovations to its infrastructure and the vineyard was in a sorry state. The family took about 5 years to rehabilitate it. The work of the Bordeaux family bore fruit and the wines finally revealed all the qualities of the terroir. The AOC Limoux red appellation recognises the family's work. Today, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild and their sister Camille Sereys de Rothschild own the Languedoc estate.

The winemaker's pride

Domaine de Baronarques is located near Limoux, more precisely in Saint-Polycarpe. This 43-hectare vineyard is part of a 110-hectare estate. None other than the De Rothschild family, owners of several great Bordeaux châteaux, is at the helm of this Languedoc château. Two-thirds of the vineyard is planted with Bordeaux grape varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The other third is planted with Mediterranean varieties such as Syrah, Grenache or Malbec for red wines, and only Chardonnay for white wines. Between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean, the vines are influenced by different climates that guarantee sufficient rainfall and ideal sunshine. Our plots, located at altitudes of between 250 and 300 meters, are protected from the intense heat of summer. The terroir is predominantly clay-limestone, except on a few plots where we work with gravelly-sandy soils.
