We are located in Maury, 35 minutes from Perpignan. We have chosen to work the vines at altitude, between 300 and 500m. These hillsides, rather low in yields, give our wines a lot of freshness and a very good ageing potential. This is why we choose to offer wines that have already aged for several years. We are located in the heart of the Côtes du Roussillon, Côtes du Roussillon villages, and Maury appellations.
It all starts with a story of friendship. This kind of crazy idea, that we launch over a glass: "What if we bought some vines to make our wine together? A few weeks later, the machine was launched. As passionate oenophiles and connoisseurs, the group of friends chose to settle in the Roussillon, a terroir with great potential but rather unknown to the general public. Their ambition is great: to make great terroir wines.
The Domaine de Vénus was created at the end of 2002 with the acquisition of the first plots. Very quickly, buoyed by the quality of its wines, the estate bought new plots of land in the magical terroir of Fenouillèdes, on the heights of the Agly Valley (Vallée de l'Aigle in Catalan).
No good wine without beautiful grapes. Laurent Abet, our vineyard manager, patiently works our high altitude slopes to obtain the best possible grapes. He has led the conversion of the estate to organic farming. The 2019 vintage marks the first 100% organic harvest on the estate.
If Laurent is in the vineyard, Nathalie, his wife, is in the cellar. Her objective: to vinify without intervening too much, by practicing little extraction (generally one pumping over per day for the reds).
Our goal is to produce generous wines, faithful to their terroir, but always digestible. Because we often tend to drink wines too young, the Domaine de Vénus has chosen to offer wines that are ready to drink. Our specificity is to practice long maturation in the bottle, when our high altitude terroir starts to impregnate the wine.
