Founded in 1953 by Jean-Louis and his 2 sons Daniel and Jean-Pierre, Domaine des Escaravailles has been owned by the Ferran family for three generations.
The name Escaravailles, from the Provençal "escaravay", was given by the inhabitants of the village to the Penitents dressed in Avignon black, Florentine nobles in charge of leading the pontifical troops and owners at the time. In 1999, Gilles Ferran, passionate about wine and history, took over the family estate after working 10 years on the estate with his father. In 1999, Gilles Ferran, passionate about wine and history, took over the family estate after working for 10 years with his father. Since this year, with the help of Philippe Cambie, a great oenologist from southern Rhône, other vintages have appeared, each with their own specific characteristics.
The vines are cultivated the old-fashioned way with ploughing and organic fertilizers. Harvesting is essentially manual and sorted. The grapes are then destemmed, vinified and matured in the semi-buried cellar, the highest in Rasteau, located in the heart of the vineyard.
In our opinion, wine is about sharing and conviviality. To make people discover wines that we love to people that we love. With this profession, we are lucky enough to be able to meet people, because wine is not just a drink, but it is everything around it. In three words: Sharing Pleasure.
Our estate is the highest and most lost in Rasteau. It extends over 65 hectares, 40 of which are composed of clay and limestone hillsides on very steep slopes in Rasteau and 25 hectares in the neighbouring municipalities of Cairannes, Roaix, Villedieu and St-Roman-de-Malegarde. It is not easily accessible. One client once told us: "When your wife starts complaining that you're lost, keep going, you're almost at the Escaravailles". The grapes are then destemmed, vinified and matured in the semi-buried cellar, the highest in Rasteau, located in the heart of the vineyard. Wine according to us, it is a sharing, it is convivial, to make people discover wines that we love. We are fortunate to be able to meet people. Wine is not just a drink. That's all there is around it. In three words: Sharing Pleasure.
