On the heights of the small medieval town of Montreuil-Bellay, the 15 hectares of vines of the estate enjoy a characteristic terroir on which we cultivate the two emblematic grape varieties of the Loire Valley: Chenin for our whites and Cabernet Franc for our reds and rosés. Today, Cynthia, Loïc and Marie bring the estate to life on a daily basis and compose between the activity of winegrowers and the educational activity. Indeed, the teachers and trainers of the Lycée Edgard Pisani, as well as the learners, join forces with the team to cultivate the vines, make the wines and welcome the public to the estate's cellar.
Created in 1967, the Domaine du Haut Bellay was created at the same time as the Montreuil-Bellay Wine School thanks to Mr. Edgard Pisani, then Minister of Agriculture and former Mayor of the town. Several generations of winegrowers from Anjou and Saumur have made their hands on the vines and in the cellar of our estate before settling down or taking over their respective family farms. Indeed, the budding winegrowers trained on the establishment participate, with the teachers and the team of the estate, in all the work in the vineyard and the cellar. For many years, we have been committed to passing on to them a taste for the job and for a job well done (our wines are regularly rewarded with medals in competitions). In the midst of an agro-ecological transition, the estate has now converted 5 hectares into Organic Agriculture and is constantly innovating and experimenting on the themes of reducing phytosanitary measures and alternative control methods against vine diseases.
The Regional Experimentation Platform, installed on site, studies innovative solutions to problems affecting today's viticulture. Thus, the plots of our estate are used for these experiments: use of ground cover plants (such as thyme for example) to avoid the use of herbicides and tillage; use of plant decoction (rhubarb among others) to help control mildew... Every year in November, the school organizes a wine fair during which students of all levels introduce hundreds of visitors to the wines of all the wine schools in France. A must-see event in the region!
