With 120 hectares today, Vignobles Mourat represents one of the largest wine-growing areas involved in organic farming in the Loire Valley. Here we are in the Loire Méridionale, in Mareuil sur Lay. Located on a very old geological break, at the crossroads of three ecosystems: the Plaine de Luçon, the Marais Poitevin and the Bocage Vendéen. The soils date from the primary era and are composed of schists and rhyolites.
At Les Mourat, we have been vibrating for the Vendée since 1880... In 1976, Jean Mourat, a young oenologist, bought the farm of Les Ardilliers and a few hectares to make his own wine. Today, Jérémie Mourat has taken over by striving to perpetuate the tradition while bringing a breath of fresh air. Thus, over the past 10 years, the estate has been gradually converted to organic farming, until the teams become true followers. Planted mainly with chenin for the whites and négrette, pinot noir and cabernet franc for the reds, the Mourat vineyards offer a wide range of wines in all three colours. From the most contemporary, to the most fruity aromas, to the most typical of good ageing, Mourat wines have one thing in common: to respect nature by revealing the flavours of the place where they grow.
For me, being a winegrower is a bit like being a witness of time, with each open bottle you remember the vintage and its anecdotes. Each vintage is a real surprise and none of them are alike, that's the magic of the wine. I don't know if it's Clos Saint André that most resembles me, but in any case, it's my blank page. My first plot bought, the first one I replanted, and the first one in organic farming.
The world of wine will always transport me, by the passion of the people around me, by the challenges to be met every day to make the new harvest even more beautiful. A challenge also every day, to make our appellation and our terroir known and recognized. On the other hand, I don't like label drinkers, wine is a sharing and everyone should be curious and keep an open mind.
