Nestled in the heart of Provence, between the hinterland of the Haut-Var and the Mediterranean Sea, Domaine de Matourne has been a matter of traditional know-how, family and passion for almost 50 years.

We follow a reasoned and sustainable farming method and focus on quality rather than quantity to produce elegant, fine and harmonious wines.

The Domaine is located at an altitude of almost 500 m in the hinterland of the Var in Provence, with deep clay-limestone siliceous soil. This unique combination in this region allows a slow ripening of the grapes that we harvest at the end of the season thanks to the hot days and cool nights that we have at this altitude.

The estate is planted with vines of the noble grape varieties of the Appellation: Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Rolle (Vermentino Bianco) and Semillon.

Apart from its fine and elegant Whites and Rosés, Matourne has made its reputation with its Reds that age extremely well for 5 or 10 years. The Red dominates and represents 80% of our production.

We harvest manually with 40kg crates to preserve the quality of the grapes. The harvest is introduced by gravity into the vats, allowing maceration and natural fermentation to take place.

Our annual production is typically between 15,000 and 20,000 bottles.

Our wine is natural and Vegan, with low sulphite levels (never above 21mg/L). We follow a reasoned and sustainable farming method.

The vines are mechanically weeded in summer and weeded by a herd of sheep in winter. We treat the vines with natural fertilizers every two years, and our use of treatments is never preventive and is limited to the minimum necessary when absolutely necessary.

Our story

In 1973 I bought a 20 hectare virgin land in Provence. I then set out to create a winery from scratch, in parallel with my regular job.

Completely new to the subject, I acquired my knowledge by reading the treatises on oenology by Ribereau and Gayon to which I still refer today.

I also got advice from winegrowers in California as well as from Domaines Ott* to whom I sold my first harvests while the winery was under construction.

The Domaine de Matourne is the story of a crazy dream and my great pride.
