Domaine de Rieussec

Rieussec Estate

Languedoc

Anecdotes from the estate: The vineyard has been replanted. We selected plots with a terroir of gravel and rolled pebbles, warmed by the sun and giving the wine all its finesse. We preserved the oldest grape varieties, Carignan, Grenache, and Cinsault, those that give the wines a traditionally Languedoc character; and we recently replanted for their quality and elegance: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Roussanne, Marsanne, Viognier, and Chenin. Our grape varieties are cultivated with care, favoring manual labor. We use as few pesticides as possible, prioritizing sustainable agriculture. All our wines are vinified in stainless steel tanks followed by 14 months of aging in French oak barrels, with frequent punch-downs to extract fruit aromas and occasional pump-overs to develop the tannic structure that gives our wines body and allows for long aging. We practice gentle pressing. Fermentation is natural, using indigenous yeasts and without the addition of chemical yeasts, which we deliberately exclude to allow the terroir to express itself. We prioritize the use of as few oenological products as possible, both in the tank and in the vineyard. We have a small, family-run operation, which assures you that the wines are crafted with the care (and passion) that comes with a close connection to the source. The Estate's History: Families with legal professions have always invested in land, and very often in vineyards. Thus, wine and law have often been traditionally linked. The RIEUSSEC estate is no exception, having always belonged primarily to judges or lawyers. However, the estate was not directly managed by its owners; it was leased. For the first time in the 21st century, the estate is being directly managed by the current owner, who, also a lawyer, ensures the continuity of both wine and law. A unique feature of the RIEUSSEC estate is that it has been passed down directly from mother to daughter and, for the last five generations, has always belonged to a woman. The Estate's Pride: A family estate in the middle Hérault valley on the road to Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert. Listed as a Historic Monument, the Domaine de Rieussec has belonged to the same family for over five centuries. The estate's vineyards, mentioned in a document dating from 853, have been cultivated since Roman times. Since the 15th century, the Rieussec vineyards have belonged to members of the legal profession who transformed Rieussec into a place for walks and leisure within a landscaped park. Visitors can explore the orangery, the English garden, the French formal garden, and the boxwood alley near a Romanesque chapel. Genealogy and the land are intertwined in history, and in 2003, the current owner, also a practicing lawyer, decided to restore the old wine cellar and open the gardens, which are also listed as Historic Monuments, to the public.
