Red wines
Red wine is the perfect companion to hearty meals, from barbecues to elegant dinners, but it deserves a closer look to truly appreciate its richness. There is an immense variety of red wines : light and fruity, full-bodied and tannic, aromatic, or aged in oak. Each has its own style, personality, and terroir.
How do you make red wine?
To make red wine, you need red grapes . Unlike white wine, it's the skins that give it its color and tannins . The key process is maceration , which is the time the juice remains in contact with the skins. The longer the maceration, the darker, more tannic, and more structured the wine will be.
-
Light reds : short maceration, soft tannins, perfect for drinking young.
-
Full-bodied reds : long maceration and sometimes barrel aging, for complex and powerful wines, capable of aging.
Grape varieties and their influence
Each grape variety produces a different style:
-
Merlot : round, supple, fruity, often the first wine one discovers.
-
Cabernet Sauvignon : full-bodied and structured, with notes of blackcurrant, pepper and sometimes cocoa.
-
Pinot Noir : elegant and refined, with aromas of cherry, raspberry and undergrowth.
-
Syrah : spicy and aromatic, sometimes peppery, often in the Rhône.
-
Gamay : light and fruity, perfect for young and convivial wines, like Beaujolais.
The role of the terroir
The local environment plays a fundamental role:
-
Burgundy : finesse, elegance, delicate and complex red wines.
-
Bordeaux : structure, power and aging capacity, often in assembly.
-
Rhône and Languedoc : generous, spicy and sunny wines.
-
Southwest : pronounced tannins and aromas of black fruit.
Red wine and food pairings
Reds are very versatile:
-
For red meats and game : opt for a full-bodied and tannic wine.
-
Grilled white meats : a light or fruity red wine is sufficient.
-
Mature cheeses : powerful red or aged cheeses that stand up to strong flavors.
-
Friendly meals : young and fruity reds, easy to drink.

Or that Pinot Noir , difficult to cultivate and temperamental, nevertheless produces some of the world's greatest red wines? At Les Grappes , we select organic, biodynamic, or sustainably produced red wines from all French and international regions, offering you fruity, powerful, elegant, or aromatic reds. Each bottle tells a story, and each tasting is a unique experience.
