Everything You Need to Know About Our Red Beaujolais Wines

The vineyards of Beaujolais is one of France’s most renowned wine regions, known for its light, full-bodied, and approachable red wines. Located between Burgundy and the Rhône Valley, it draws its strong identity from the Gamay grape variety and a wide variety of terroirs.

A terroir dominated by granite

Most red Beaujolais wines come from granite soils, particularly in the northern part of the region. These poor, well-drained soils naturally limit yields and promote concentrated grapes, resulting in expressive, fruit-forward wines.

The temperate climate, combined with south-facing slopes, allows the grapes to ripen gradually and imparts a lovely aromatic freshness to the finished wines.

Gamay, the region's primary grape variety

Red Beaujolais wines are made almost exclusively from the Gamay noir à jus blanc grape variety. This variety is known for its ability to produce smooth, fruity wines with low tannin levels.

The aromatic profiles are dominated by fresh red fruits such as cherries, raspberries, and strawberries, sometimes accompanied by floral notes (peony, violet) and subtle spicy hints, depending on the terroir and winemaking techniques.

A variety of styles depending on the appellation

The region offers several levels of appellations:

  • Beaujolais and Beaujolais-Villages, with their light, fruity, and very approachable wines
  • The Beaujolais appellations, further north, produce more structured and complex wines such as Morgon, Fleurie, Brouilly, and Juliénas

This diversity allows us to cover a wide range of styles, from wines meant to be enjoyed right away to those meant for aging.

Red wines designed for enjoyment and socializing

Red Beaujolais wines are known for their rich, full-bodied flavor and approachability. They are often crafted to preserve their fruitiness and freshness, using gentle extraction methods and moderate aging. However, some vintages can develop greater complexity and depth over time.

Food and Wine Pairings

Red Beaujolais wines pair naturally with simple, home-style dishes: cold cuts, roasted poultry, white meats, grilled meats, or vegetarian dishes. More full-bodied wines also pair well with heartier meats such as duck or lamb.

A region constantly being rediscovered

Red Beaujolais is currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity, driven by a new generation of winemakers and a growing emphasis on precision and respect for the terroir. This trend
