All About Red Wines

Red wine is the perfect accompaniment to hearty meals, from barbecues to elegant dinners, but it deserves a little closer attention to truly appreciate its richness. There is a vast variety of red wines: light and fruity, full-bodied and tannic, aromatic, or barrel-aged. Each has its own style, personality, and terroir.

How is red wine made?

To produce red wine, red grapes are required. Unlike white wine, it is the skins that impart color and tannins. The key process is maceration, which refers to the duration the juice remains in contact with the skins. The longer the maceration, the darker, more tannic, and more structured the wine.

  • Light-bodied Reds: short maceration, soft tannins, ideal for early consumption.

  • Full-bodied Reds: long maceration and sometimes barrel aging, resulting in complex and powerful wines with aging potential.

Grape Varieties and Their Influence

Each grape variety yields a distinct style:

  • Merlot: round, supple, fruity, often the first wine one encounters.

  • Cabernet Sauvignon: full-bodied and structured, with notes of blackcurrant, pepper, and sometimes cocoa.

  • Pinot Noir: elegant and refined, with aromas of cherry, raspberry, and forest floor.

  • Syrah: spicy and aromatic, sometimes peppery, frequently found in the Rhône region.

  • Gamay: light and fruity, perfect for youthful and approachable wines, such as Beaujolais.

The Role of Terroir

Terroir plays a fundamental role:

  • Bourgogne: finesse, elegance, delicate and complex red wines.

  • Bordeaux: structure, power, and aging potential, often in blends.

  • Rhône and Languedoc: generous, spicy, and sun-drenched wines.

  • South-West: pronounced tannins and dark fruit aromas.

Red Wine and Food Pairings

Red wines are highly versatile:

  • Red Meats and Game: opt for a full-bodied and tannic wine.

  • Grilled White Meats: a light or fruity red wine is sufficient.

  • Aged Cheeses: powerful or aged reds that can stand up to strong flavors.

  • Social Gatherings: young and fruity reds, easy to drink.

Educational Anecdotes

Did you know that Cabernet Sauvignon is now cultivated worldwide, but originated in Bordeaux? Or that Pinot Noir, challenging to cultivate and temperamental, yet yields some of the world's greatest red wines? Winemakers constantly strive for the balance between fruit, acidity, and tannins to produce harmonious wines.

At Les Grappes, we select organic, biodynamic, or sustainably farmed red wines from all French and international regions, to help you discover fruity, powerful, elegant, or aromatic reds. Each bottle tells a story, and every tasting is an experience in itself.
