Everything You Need to Know About Our Savoie Red Wines

The vineyards of Savoie vineyards stretch across the heart of the Alps, on steep slopes shaped by altitude, lakes, and a mountain climate. These unique conditions give rise to refined, light red wines characterized by a lovely aromatic freshness.

Alpine terroirs shaped by altitude

The soils of Savoy are highly varied, consisting of a mix of limestone scree, glacial moraines, and clay. Altitude plays a key role in the character of the wines: cooler temperatures slow the ripening of the grapes and promote a delicate expression of fruit.

This blend produces red wines with a light, airy profile and a lovely natural acidity.

Local grape varieties with distinctive character

Red wines from Savoie are made from several indigenous or traditional grape varieties:

  • Mondeuse, an iconic, full-bodied, and spicy grape variety
  • Gamay, for fruitier and more supple wines
  • Pinot Noir, which adds finesse and elegance depending on the blend

Mondeuse is particularly representative of the Savoyard style, with its notes of black fruit, violet, and spices.

Light, aromatic red wines

Savoyard reds are distinguished by their freshness and ease of drinking. They offer aromas of red and black fruits, sometimes complemented by peppery and floral notes. The structure remains supple, with fine tannins and a lovely liveliness on the palate.

Food and Wine Pairings

These wines pair perfectly with mountain cuisine: charcuterie, diots, grilled meats, cheese-based dishes, and traditional Savoyard recipes. Their freshness also makes them excellent accompaniments to simpler, everyday meals.

An authentic Alpine expression

Savoie’s red wines fully reflect their high-altitude terroir: precise, fresh, and distinctive wines, crafted from local grape varieties and time-honored expertise. They offer a unique alternative to the more powerful reds from neighboring regions.
