Our opinion on the vintage
Au Bon Climat
Au Bon Climat is an iconic estate in Santa Barbara County, California, founded in the early 1980s by Jim Clendenen. From its inception, the estate distinguished itself by its desire to produce wines inspired by the great European, particularly Burgundian, balances, going against the grain of the dominant Californian style of the time.
The vineyards are located in cool areas influenced by the Pacific Ocean, notably the Santa Maria Valley and the Santa Ynez Valley. This proximity to the sea allows for slow ripening of the grapes, promoting freshness, balance, and aromatic complexity, particularly for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
The estate's philosophy is based on precise winemaking, controlled yields, and careful aging, with a judicious use of oak. Au Bon Climat wines are renowned for their aging potential and their elegant expression of the Californian terroir.
