Au Bon Climat
Au Bon Climat is an iconic winery in Santa Barbara County, California, founded in the early 1980s by Jim Clendenen. From its inception, the winery has distinguished itself through its commitment to producing wines inspired by the great European styles—particularly Burgundy—in contrast to the dominant California style of the time.
The vineyards are located in cool regions influenced by the Pacific Ocean, notably the Santa Maria Valley and the Santa Ynez Valley. This proximity to the ocean allows the grapes to ripen slowly, promoting freshness, balance, and aromatic complexity, particularly in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
The estate’s philosophy is based on precise winemaking techniques, controlled yields, and meticulous aging, with judicious use of oak. Au Bon Climat wines are renowned for their aging potential and their elegant expression of the California terroir.
