Châteaux Montus et Bouscassé

A leading figure in southwestern France, Alain Brumont has profoundly transformed the image of Madiran over the past few decades. In the 1980s, he took over Château Bouscassé and undertook a major project to consolidate the vineyards, expanding from a small core of vines to a total of more than 120 hectares. The diverse and contrasting clay-limestone terroirs became the foundation for a nuanced and ambitious interpretation of Tannat.

Shortly thereafter, he purchased Château Montus, which was then in a state of disrepair. The estate was rebuilt stone by stone with a clear vision: to produce wines with exceptional aging potential capable of rivaling the greatest French reds. Montus quickly became the fullest-bodied and most structured expression of his work, while Bouscassé retained a more classic, earthy interpretation of Madiran.

Always ahead of his time, Alain Brumont is a pioneer on many fronts: late harvests, sweet wines, precise management of ripeness, as well as exceptional expertise in winemaking and aging. The creation of the “Tannat vault,” capable of holding several million bottles, exemplifies this long-term vision in which time is an integral part of the project.

Today, the vineyards are managed according to a Level 3 HVE-certified environmental approach, incorporating biodiversity, agroforestry, and measures to minimize the impact on soil and water. The wines gain nuance with age: powerful without excess, deep, structured, yet increasingly approachable. More than just a style, Montus and Bouscassé embody a gastronomic vision of Madiran, designed for the table and for aging.
