Everything You Need to Know About Domaine François Schwach

In Hunawihr, in the heart of the Alsace Wine Route, Domaine François Schwach has been carrying on a family tradition deeply rooted in the Alsatian vineyards for three generations. Across 19 hectares of vineyards, the Schwach family cultivates a mosaic of terroirs located around Ribeauvillé, Hunawihr, and Riquewihr, paying particular attention to the region’s geological diversity.

The vineyard benefits in particular from the famous Ribeauvillé fault zone, a particularly complex geological area where marl, limestone, sandstone, clay, and schist coexist. This diversity of soils provides the vines with conditions that vary greatly from one plot to another and allows the estate to seek out the precise expression of each terroir. Among the iconic plots is the Muehlforst vineyard in Hunawihr, a south-facing marl-limestone terroir where 50- to 60-year-old vines produce Riesling and Gewurztraminer wines.

Since 2020, the entire production has been certified organic. Both in the vineyard and in the winery, the Schwach family strives to preserve the grapes’ natural balance as much as possible. Fermentation takes place slowly, at low temperatures, in temperature-controlled tanks, while sulfites are used sparingly, at levels below regulatory limits. The estate’s Crémants go even further with cuvées containing no added sulfites.

Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Muscat, Sylvaner, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay make up a range that spans various styles, from fresh, approachable wines to gourmet cuvées from lesser-known terroirs. The estate also produces Crémants using the traditional method, including some cuvées with no added sulfites.

Behind Schwach wines lies a consistent philosophy: respecting nature, highlighting the diversity of Alsatian terroirs, and offering wines that remain accessible to both curious enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike. A family-run winery that combines a precise understanding of terroir, organic farming, and a decidedly approachable approach to wine.
