Everything You Need to Know About Domaine La Coume-Lumet
Founded in 2013 byLuc and Isabelle Abadie, the La Coume-Lumet estate was born out of a true family career change. Nothing suggested that this couple—he an engineer at Airbus and she a psychologist—would become winemakers. Driven by their passion for wine and guided by oenologist Matthieu Dubernet, they left their former lives behind to take over an exceptional vineyard in Cépie, north of Limoux, in the Aude department. After several years of searching, they fell in love with this property nestled in a natural cirque, whose Occitan name “Coume” means “steep-sided valley.”
The estate now spans 54 hectares in a single block, including 17 hectares of vineyards, in the heart of a Natura 2000 protected area. Situated at an altitude of approximately 350 meters, it overlooks the Aude Valley with an unobstructed view of the Pyrenees. This privileged geographical location offers a unique climate where Mediterranean influences—synonymous with ripeness and richness—meet oceanic influences, which bring freshness and balance. This climatic contrast is one of the hallmarks of La Coume-Lumet’s wines.
The vineyards are situated on clay-limestone soils covered with rounded pebbles derived from ancient glacial moraines, along with some sandier areas. This diverse terroir is home to both Limoux’s iconic white grape varieties— Chardonnay, Chenin, and Mauzac —and the red varieties Merlot, Syrah, Grenache, and Malbec. This diversity allows the estate to produce Crémants de Limoux, white wines for fine dining, as well as full-bodied, structured reds.
Since its founding, La Coume-Lumet has practiced sustainable viticulture certified by Terra Vitis. Treatments are limited to what is strictly necessary, and interventions in both the vineyards and the winery are kept to a minimum to preserve the grapes’ natural balance. Winemaking is designed to be minimally interventionist, prioritizing the expression of the fruit and the terroir, while aging is tailored to each cuvée, ranging from stainless steel tanks and barrels to extended aging on racks for sparkling wines.
The estate showcases its expertise through several wine lines. The Maset wines, classified as IGP Haute Vallée de l'Aude, offer approachable, enjoyable wines. Lo Camin, classified as AOP Limoux, features wines partially aged in barrels, combining freshness and complexity. Finally, Les Coume represents the estate’s most ambitious single-vineyard wines, with longer aging periods that highlight the depth of the Limoux terroirs. The estate also produces a Crémant de Limoux Brut Nature, made using the traditional method and aged for an extended period on racks, which perfectly illustrates the finesse of the appellation’s great sparkling wines.
The quality of the work produced by Luc and Isabelle Abadie is regularly recognized by the Guide Hachette des Vins, which highlights several of their wines for their precision, balance, and aging potential. Today, La Coume-Lumet has established itself as one of the rising stars of the Limoux appellation, offering authentic, elegant wines that are deeply influenced by their exceptional natural environment.
