La Herdade do Mouchão

Alentejo | Portugal

Herdade do Mouchão is an iconic winery located in Portugal’s Alentejo region. Founded in the early 20th century by the Reynolds family, it is renowned for introducing the Alicante Bouschet grape variety to the region. The estate spans nearly 900 hectares, including numerous plots of old vines that produce high-quality grapes.

This winery produces several lines of wine, including Mouchão, a powerful, full-bodied red made primarily from Alicante Bouschet and aged for an extended period in traditional oak barrels, as well as wines such as Dom Rafael and Ponte Mouchão, which showcase diversity and finesse. White wines are produced from grape varieties such as Verdelho.

The estate’s winemaking follows traditional methods, including hand-harvesting, aging in oak, and winemaking techniques designed to fully express the characteristics of the Alentejo terroir, resulting in elegant, complex wines with excellent aging potential.
