The wine here is so renowned that the village took its name from its "climat"—not the other way around! In 1922, the white and red wines produced in this part of the appellation convinced the village to change its name from Pernand to Pernand-Vergelesses, honoring the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes grown in the area! The wines here have exceptional aging potential; some whites can age for up to 8 years. These whites are fairly light in color, quite pale, and on the palate they are dry and lively. The reds, on the other hand, have a very intense hue—very...red!—and on the palate, the fairly pronounced tannins will make you prefer wines that have aged a bit.
