Espagne

Spain is one of the world's largest wine-producing countries and boasts the largest vineyard area. Between its Mediterranean climate, Atlantic influences, and high-altitude areas, Spanish wine stands out for its incredible diversity of styles. Buying Spanish wine means exploring characterful reds, fresh and gastronomic whites, as well as internationally renowned historical appellations.

A contrasted vineyard between sea and plateau

The Spanish vineyard stretches from the Atlantic north to the Andalusian south, passing through the high plateaus of the central Meseta. Altitude plays a major role in the balance of the wines: despite significant sunshine, cool nights help preserve acidity and aromatic freshness. This combination results in sunny yet structured wines, often marked by their terroir.

Major wine regions of Spain

Rioja is one of the most emblematic regions, renowned for its Tempranillo-based reds, aged in oak barrels and recognized for their elegance and aging potential. Ribera del Duero produces more powerful and concentrated wines, often from old vines located at high altitudes. In Priorat, schist soils give rise to intense and mineral wines. Conversely, Rías Baixas, in Galicia, is known for its fresh and saline Albariño-based whites, influenced by the Atlantic Ocean.

Emblematic Spanish grape varieties

Tempranillo is Spain's flagship grape variety. It produces red wines with aromas of red and black fruits, spices, and sometimes vanilla when aged in barrels. Garnacha produces softer and warmer wines, while Monastrell brings power and depth in more southern regions. On the white side, Albariño captivates with its freshness and citrus notes, and Verdejo offers lively and slightly herbaceous aromatic profiles.

Characteristics of Spanish wines

Spanish wines are distinguished by their aromatic richness, structure, and balance between ripeness and freshness. Reds can be powerful and suitable for aging, especially in high-altitude regions, but also softer and fruitier depending on the terroirs. Whites, often from coastal or elevated areas, show beautiful tension and great drinkability. Oak aging also plays an important role in certain appellations, bringing complexity and elegant woody notes.

Why buy Spanish wine online?

Choosing a Spanish wine means discovering a historic vineyard capable of offering traditional cuvées as well as more modern and precise interpretations. At Les Grappes, we select Spanish wines representative of their terroirs and grape varieties, to offer you an authentic and varied experience of the great Iberian vineyard.
