Everything You Need to Know About Spain

Spain is one of the world’s leading wine-producing countries and boasts the largest vineyard area. Thanks to its Mediterranean climate, Atlantic influences, and high-altitude regions, Spanish wine is distinguished by an incredible diversity of styles. Buying Spanish wine means exploring full-bodied reds, fresh and food-friendly whites, as well as internationally renowned historic appellations.

A vineyard rich in contrasts, nestled between the sea and the plateau

Spanish vineyards stretch from the Atlantic coast in the north to Andalusia in the south, passing through the high plateaus of the Central Meseta. Altitude plays a major role in the balance of the wines: despite abundant sunshine, cool nights help preserve acidity and aromatic freshness. This combination results in sunny yet structured wines, often strongly influenced by their terroir.

Spain's Major Wine Regions

The Rioja is one of the most iconic regions, renowned for its Tempranillo-based reds, aged in oak barrels and recognized for their elegance and aging potential. The Ribera del Duero produces more powerful and concentrated wines, often made from old vines located at high altitudes. In Priorat, the schist soils give rise to intense, mineral-driven wines. In contrast, the Rías Baixas, in Galicia, is known for its fresh, briny Albariño-based whites, influenced by the Atlantic Ocean.

Spain's iconic grape varieties

Tempranillo is Spain’s flagship grape variety. It produces red wines with aromas of red and black fruits, spices, and sometimes vanilla when aged in oak barrels. Garnacha yields softer, warmer wines, while Monastrell brings power and depth to wines from the southern regions. As for whites, Albariño charms with its freshness and citrus notes, and Verdejo offers lively, slightly herbaceous aromatic profiles.

Characteristics of Spanish wines

Spanish wines are distinguished by their aromatic richness, structure, and balance between ripeness and freshness. Reds can be powerful and suitable for aging, particularly in high-altitude regions, but they can also be more supple and fruity depending on the terroir. Whites, often from coastal or high-altitude areas, offer a lovely acidity and are very easy to drink. Aging in oak barrels also plays an important role in certain appellations, adding complexity and elegant woody notes.

Why buy Spanish wine online?

Choosing a Spanish wine means discovering a historic wine region that offers both traditional vintages and more modern, refined interpretations. At Les Grappes, we select Spanish wines that reflect their terroirs and grape varieties, offering you an authentic and diverse experience of the great Iberian wine region.
