Vin De Pays De L’Atlantique

The IGP Atlantique, formerly known as Vin de Pays de l'Atlantique until 2006, is a regional protected geographical indication in southwestern France. It covers five departments along the Atlantic coast: Charente, Charente-Maritime, Dordogne, Gironde, and part of Lot-et-Garonne. It is the only PGI authorized within the Bordeaux wine region, offering producers freedom in blending and grape variety selection that neighboring AOCs do not always allow.

A vineyard shaped by the ocean

As its name suggests, this appellation enjoys a temperate oceanic climate, with mild winters and relatively cool summers, tempered by the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean. The soils, which are mainly limestone and clay, though sometimes sandy-clay or stony depending on the area, offer a rich diversity of terroirs between the Charentes and Gironde regions.

Grape varieties inherited from the Bordeaux region and the Southwest

The red and rosé wines of the Atlantique IGP are primarily made from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Côt (Malbec)—grape varieties emblematic of the Bordeaux region. The white wines, on the other hand, feature Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle, resulting in fresh, aromatic wines with notes of citrus and exotic fruits.

Wines with a briny character

Atlantic reds charm with their aromas of ripe red fruits and supple tannins, while the lively and refreshing whites and rosés are a natural pairing for seafood: Arcachon oysters, mussels, and grilled fish. These are wines meant for immediate enjoyment, and they’re widely available along the Aquitaine and Charente coasts during the tourist season.
