Anecdotes about the domain
The place where the estate is located is called La Rune, which is why the estate is called La Rune. The name of the estate inspired the winemakers to name their cuvées, so you'll notice that some of the cuvées have names straight out of the runic alphabet! This script, which originated in Northern Europe, was often engraved on stones and is now found on bottle labels! Each rune is equivalent to a symbol, so it's up to you to decide whether this symbol makes you think of this wine! What's more, there's also a weaving workshop on the estate.
The domain's short story
Perched at an altitude of 200 meters in the Hautes Corbières, the estate is set in a wild, natural environment. The terroirs are very varied and are exposed to a north-westerly wind. The climate is very dry, which minimizes the need for treatments to obtain grapes rich in sugar and with aromas of garrigue. Red grape varieties include Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. The white varieties are Bourboulenc (typical of the South of France) and Marsanne. The grapes are vinified destemmed, which means that the vegetal part of the bunch is removed to avoid overly herbaceous aromas. The cap is punched down by hand, to ensure gentle extraction of color. Vinification is carried out in barrels or demi-muids (600 liters), the demi-muid having gradually replaced the muid. Southern and Mediterranean wines are often aged in these large barrels. In 2015, the estate made its first cuvée in ecological transition, and today it is entirely organic.
The winemaker's pride
The Domaine de la Rune in the Hautes Corbières mountains is now run by the 5th generation of the Rémon family. The gestures haven't really changed, and neither has the philosophy of respect for the terroirs. The family, aware of the richness of these vines, lovingly takes the necessary care of them. The estate's 35 plots are spread over the rocky hillsides of Talairan, St Laurent de la Cabrerisse and Jonquières. All the work carried out is prophylactic. The altitude provides the vines with the freshness required for perfect ripening of the tannins and the preservation of very fruity, fresh notes. The winery is very modern and was built entirely by the family. Eco-responsible materials were carefully chosen, while respecting ancestral techniques. The cellar is semi-underground and perfectly insulated. This technical tool is essential for working the grapes and ageing the wine. The vats are cubic and lined with concrete, enabling manual punching down and gentle pumping over. Between know-how and personal sensitivity, the gustatory guideline for the wines is finesse, while some are then worked for power and others for ease. This whole qualitative process also demands a great deal of technical skill.
