Provence Region
Everything you need to know about the Provence region
Provence is a wine region located in southeastern France, between the Rhône Valley, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Alps. It is primarily known for its rosé wines, but it also produces quality red and white wines. The Provençal vineyards are distinguished by a pronounced Mediterranean climate, a wide diversity of terroirs, and wines crafted for conviviality and pairing with food.
A Mediterranean vineyard
Provence enjoys a warm and sunny Mediterranean climate , with dry summers, mild winters, and a regular influence of the mistral wind, which naturally cleanses the vines. This combination promotes good grape ripening while limiting disease.
The vineyard extends from the eastern Rhône Valley to the French Riviera, across varied landscapes combining hills, plateaus, scrubland and coastal areas.
Varied soils
The soils of Provence are very diverse depending on the area:
-
limestone and clay-limestone soils in the hinterland
-
schistous or volcanic soils in certain coastal areas
-
alluvial terraces and rounded pebbles in warmer areas
This diversity of soils contributes to the variety of wine styles produced in Provence.
Wine appellations and styles
Provence has several major appellations, including Côtes de Provence , Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence , Coteaux Varois en Provence and Bandol .
Rosé wines represent the majority of production. They are generally dry, fresh and aromatic, with notes of red fruit, citrus and sometimes flowers.
Red wines are often structured and spicy, especially in certain appellations like Bandol.
The white wines, which are more exclusive, offer fresh and aromatic profiles.
Grape varieties of Provence
Provence wines are most often made from blends.
The main grape varieties are:
-
Grenache , Cinsault , Syrah , Mourvèdre for the reds and rosés
-
Rolle (Vermentino) , Ugni Blanc , Clairette for whites
These grape varieties produce sun-drenched wines, balanced by a natural freshness linked to the climate and soils.
Food and wine pairings from Provence
Rosé wines from Provence pair easily with summer cuisine: salads, grilled vegetables, fish, barbecues or Mediterranean cuisine.
Red wines pair well with grilled meats, spicy dishes, or richer Provençal recipes.
White wines pair well with fish, seafood and fresh cheeses.
