Luberon

Even if you’ve never set foot there, it’s impossible not to have heard of the Luberon. Famous for its hilltop villages such as Gordes, Bonnieux, and Ménerbes, as well as for having inspired great artists like Picasso, Camus, and André Lhote, the Luberon boasts a rich cultural and winemaking history, even though its wines haven’t always received the recognition they deserve.

Established sinceancient times, the Luberon wine region has undergone a true renaissance thanks to the efforts of passionate winemakers. Today, the Luberon appellation (formerly AOC Côtes-du-Luberon) regularly receives recognition in competitions and specialized guides.

Located in the Vaucluse department, south of the Rhône Valley, the vineyard covers approximately 3,362 hectares in the heart of the Luberon Regional Nature Park. The vines, planted at altitudes ranging from 200 to 450 meters, benefit from significant daily temperature fluctuations, ensuring freshness and balance.

TheMediterranean-influenced climate offers nearly 2,600 hours of sunshine per year, promoting optimal ripening of the grapes, particularly for white grape varieties.

The terroirs are diverse, combining Miocene sands, limestone scree, and red clays, which contribute to the complexity and diversity of the wines produced.

Wines from the Luberon AOC are made exclusively from blends of several grape varieties. The reds and rosés are based on Syrah and Grenache Noir, supplemented by Mourvèdre and Cinsault. The whites typically combine Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Vermentino, Bourboulenc, Roussanne, Marsanne, Ugni Blanc, and Viognier.

On the palate, the reds boast a vibrant ruby color and aromas of ripe fruit, spices, and toasted notes, with a full-bodied mouthfeel and silky tannins. The rosés, with their bright color and cherry-red hues, charm with their freshness and balance.

The whites have a pale, clear, and brilliant color, a nose marked by floral and citrus notes (lemon, grapefruit), and a harmonious palate that balances acidity and richness.

When it comes to food pairing, Luberon wines pair just as well with robust meats like lamb or game as they do with fish, shellfish, or snails, showcasing the versatility and modernity of this Southern Rhône appellation.
