Buy Wines of Loupiac
All our winemakers in LoupiacSince ancient times, the Loupiac, aka « Lupus », which means wolf in Latin, has always aroused curiosity. The poet Ausone was already singing praises about this vine even before the creation of its name. But don’t be afraid, it’s not like throwing yourself into the wolf’s mouth to let yourself be tempted by a little glass of Loupiac. On the contrary, Little Red Riding Hood itself allows you to let yourself be tempted by this sweet wine.
Located thirty minutes from Bordeaux on the right bank of the Garonne between Cadillac and Sainte-Croix-du-Mont, in the region between the two lands, the AOC communale Loupiac which extends over 350 hectares covers only about fifty winegrowers and is limited in annual production per hectare to about 5000 bottles by a 1936 decree. Human dimension and quality are the key words of Loupiac wines.
The vine is planted only on slopes and plateaus, only the respect of this criterion allows to receive the appellation. The terroir is therefore extremely important for these wines. These slopes allow the vineyard to receive optimal conditions for development. Indeed, these small hills composed of limestone subsoils at their base and clayey-gravelly subsoils on their tops allow water to drain very easily and therefore the vine to retain only what is necessary for its development.
In addition to the geography very favourable to produce grapes of very good quality, the microclimate, the result of the meeting between fire and water, is an additional asset in the service of the good development of the vine. The sun that radiates the vines in summer, turns in autumn towards the Garonne and then generates morning fogs that contribute to the development of noble rot (known as Botrytis Cinerea). Noble rot is a fungus that dries out the grape and promotes the concentration of its sugars.
As far as the grape varieties are concerned, Loupiac is the result of the blending of three grape varieties: Sémillon is the main one (80%), Sauvignon is present (15%) and Muscadelle (5%). This combination is only found in this region of France. These wines can be kept between 8 and 10 or even more for some wines.
When you serve yourself a glass, you will notice that the Loupiac is dressed in a golden or yellow colour with golden highlights and your nose will enjoy an elegant bouquet composed of aromas of candied fruit, fig, honey and roasted notes. Over time, gingerbread, citrus fruits, dried fruits, prunes and broom will enrich the bouquet. Finally, the taste phase will reveal a rich and unctuous wine as well as an elegant structure supported by a beautiful acidity. The aromatic notes perceived during the olfactory phase are accentuated and offer a beautiful length.
For successful food and wine pairings, don't hesitate to combine Loupiac with fine fish such as Turbot, foie gras, poultry or desserts such as fruit tarts and sorbets.
