The Anjou vineyard is located mainly in Maine-et-Loire, in the south of Angers, but it also extends to some municipalities of the Deux-Sèvres and Vienne French departments.
With an area of about 5,930 acres, the annual production can reach 135,000 hectolitres. Anjou is located in two very distinct geographical regions: to the west, there is the Armorican Massif and its schistose soils, and to the east there is the Paris basin and its white lands made of its smooth cream and white tuffeau. This very rich soil allows the production of very varied wines, and thus satisfies the curiosity of wine enthusiasts who are perpetually searching for novelty when buying authentic Anjou wines.
Furthermore, the location of the vineyard in the Loire Valley allows the vine to benefit from the oceanic climate, but also from a microclimate, to the extent that the winds are gusting dry and rainfall records below 600 millimetres of precipitation per year. Therefore, the best conditions are gathered to produce quality Anjou wines.
The major grape varieties are Chenin which is used to produce the white AOC Anjou wine. The quantity of Chenin at the time wines are blended during the production process must be at a minimum of 80%. Other grape varieties are used, like the Chardonnay and the Sauvignon, but these represent a small percentage of white Anjou wines. The main grape varieties of the red Anjou wine are Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. They can be blended with other accessory grape varieties, but these must not exceed 30% of the final composition in order for you to buy an Anjou wine designated as AOC.
When tasting this delicious red Anjou wine, you will notice at first that it reveals a very bright ruby colour. The white Anjou wine shows a pale yellow colour with green glints (which can be golden if the grapes have been harvested overripe). Later during the tasting, the red Anjou wines will fill your mouth and your nose with very floral hints and red fruits, whereas the white Anjou wine will deliver lovely aromas of white flowers and white fruits. You will enjoy the red Anjou wine as it is round in mouth; you will definitely appreciate its fine and elegant tannin structure. The white Anjou wine is simply delectable, it seduces by its freshness and balance between alcohol and acidity and its very fruity character. These wines can be savoured young (from March-April) but can potentially be stored for up to 3 years.
