Located in the town of Assignan, in the heart of the Saint-Chinian appellation, Château Castigno is set in a pristine environment at the gateway to the Haut-Languedoc Regional Nature Park. The vineyard covers approximately 32 hectares, situated on hillsides reaching an altitude of around 250 meters, amidst a landscape of garrigue, red soils, and limestone formations typical of the region.
The vines, most of which are over 50 years old, are cultivated using organic farming methods. The vineyard management focuses on naturally low yields, careful attention to the soil, and hand-harvesting, in order to preserve the freshness and gradual ripening of the grapes. The grape varieties are intentionally diverse, blending historic Mediterranean varieties from the Languedoc with lesser-known varieties, offering a nuanced expression of the Saint-Chinian terroir.
The winemaking process relies on modern equipment designed to operate with precision without smoothing out the wine’s character: stainless steel tanks, oak barrels, truncated cone-shaped tanks, and tulip-shaped tanks, complemented by an underground barrel cellar that facilitates controlled aging. The winemaking decisions aim to enhance the wine’s natural qualities rather than alter them, seeking a balance between aromatic expression, tannic structure, and natural tension.
The wines of Château Castigno are distinguished by their structured yet approachable profiles, where notes of garrigue, spices, and ripe fruit come through without heaviness.
