Everything You Need to Know About Mercurey

The largest appellation in the Burgundy wine region, covering just 645 hectares, Mercurey boasts a terroir where precision is key: located 12 km northwest of Chalon-sur-Saône, the best vineyard plots sit at exactly 260 meters above sea level! The wines are mostly red, but there is also a small production of white wines. Pinot Noir for the reds, Chardonnay for the whites—no frills in Mercurey. These grape varieties are characteristic of the vineyards in this part of Burgundy. Add to that the hillsides and limestone soil, and the wine is no exception: with a very intense ruby color and hints of purple, aromatic scents of red fruit on the nose, and aging with woody notes, Mercurey red wine is dry, simple, and elegant on the palate and can be cellared for 3 to 6 years! The presence of tannins gives it good aging potential. It pairs well with quality cuts of red meat, roast pork, or poultry. On the nose, dry white wines are floral with notes of almonds and hazelnuts. They pair perfectly with grilled fish or fish in sauce, as well as cooked seafood.
