Mercurey
Mercurey
The largest appellation in the Burgundy wine region, covering only 645 hectares, Mercurey boasts a terroir where precision is key: 12km northwest of Chalon-sur-Saône, the best vineyard plots are situated at precisely 260 meters above sea level! The wines are predominantly red, but a small production of white wines is also made. Pinot Noir for the reds, Chardonnay for the whites—no frills in Mercurey. These grape varieties are characteristic of the vineyards in this part of Burgundy. Add to that the hillsides and limestone soil, and the wine is no exception: with a very intense ruby color and hints of violet, aromatic red fruit scents on the nose, and aging with woody notes, Mercurey red wine is dry, simple, and elegant on the palate and can be cellared for 3 to 6 years! The presence of tannins gives it good aging potential. It pairs well with good cuts of red meat, roast pork, or poultry. On the nose, dry white wines are floral with notes of almonds and hazelnuts. It is a perfect match for grilled or sauced fish, as well as cooked seafood.
