Les Vieilles Vignes 2022

Saint-Nicolas-De-Bourgueil | Rouge | 2022

Blended from a selection of the estate’s old-vine plots, with an average age of about 55 years, the Les Quarterons Vieilles Vignes cuvée offers a deeper, more structured expression of Cabernet Franc. The vines are rooted in varied soils—a mix of gravel, clay-siliceous soil, and hints of limestone—which lend the wine complexity and balance.

Cultivated using organic and biodynamic methods, the vines are tended with precision to bring out the full richness of these old vineyards. The grapes, harvested by hand at peak ripeness and carefully sorted, ensure a high-quality raw material.

The winemaking process involves a long maceration period of 3 to 5 weeks in tanks, allowing for gentle and gradual extraction. Aging for 12 to 18 months in 500-liter demi-muids—a portion of which is replaced each year—adds structure, complexity, and finesse to the wine.

Our Review of the Cuvée

After aeration, the nose reveals a beautiful aromatic complexity, blending notes of violet with aromas of stewed dark fruits, such as blueberries and blackcurrants.

On the palate, the attack is full-bodied and structured. The texture is dense, supported by pronounced yet elegant tannins. The wine gains precision with aeration.

A fine dining wine, built for aging, ideal with red meats, slow-cooked dishes like beef cheek, or mushrooms sautéed with parsley.

Enjoy it while listening to Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” for a truly immersive experience!

Located in Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Clos des Quarterons is a family estate rooted in the region for over 180 years. It is currently managed by Xavier Amirault and his wife Agnès, who cultivate approximately 30 hectares of vines within the appellation's strictly defined area.

The vineyard benefits from a particularly favorable environment: a forest to the north protects the plots from cold winds, while south-facing slopes provide consistent sunshine. The soils exhibit significant diversity, blending gravels, tuffeau directly exposed in the limestone, and deeper areas with a predominant clay composition. This geological variety necessitates precise plot-by-plot management.

The estate is managed using organic farming practices, complemented by a progressively integrated biodynamic approach, with particular attention paid to vine observation and soil vitality. Vinifications are conducted plot by plot to preserve the specific characteristics of each terroir.
