In the middle of the Catalan countryside and a few kilometres from the Mediterranean coast is the young estate La Toupie. Created in 2012, this 10 hectare estate on the edge of the village of Maury produces wines with the Côtes du Roussillon, Côtes du Roussillon Villages and Maury appellations.
It is in these unique landscapes, on the foothills of the Pyrenees, that Jérôme Collas decided to take the plunge and become a winegrower. After several experiences in the wine industry, it is with Domaine la Toupie that Jérôme works hard to find the right balance for these wines. It was
this search for balance that inspired him to give the name of La Toupie to this domain.
The history of the estate began with the purchase of old vines on magnificent tenements in the villages of Maury, Tautavel and Saint Paul de Fenouillet: both close to Perpignan and yet already at the end of the world. This place offers us breathtaking landscapes, this vineyard is full of a real palette of micro-terroirs with a strong identity, very contrasting: varied exposures, acidic and calcareous soils, low to medium soil depth, old to very old vines, multiple and adapted grape varieties, optimal maturity, hillside.
These vines are steeped in history, because for many of them, more than fifty years old, they deserve a lot of attention, careful supervision and essentially manual intervention on steep slopes. But they offer the grapes that naturally and without artifice will give the cellar wines of character.
After 4 vintages, the estate continues its construction with the construction of a new wine storehouse on Maury in 2017...
The winegrower must know how to decipher his terroir, adapt to it and accompany his vines until the harvest so that they reserve the best in the cellar: wines of pleasure, with a well marked character, without excessive extraction and work in the cellar, to keep the fruit, the balance on the finesse and elegance, the mark of the vintage.
Being a winegrower means offering and enjoying great moments of conviviality and exchange. And what a pride to present your wines...
Knowing how to remain curious and each year questioning oneself, trying new ways to build one's signature, year after year. Keeping it simple, affordable and talking about wine is what motivates me the most when I am in my vineyards. I like to provoke the sensation in a sip of wine an emotion, a sensation, the desire to come back... : maybe that's what it means to make a successful wine.
