The estate consists of 30 hectares, spread all around the commune of Sussargues. These are parcels that have been bought over generations, some by Emilien's great-grandfather. The soils are all varied, some in rolled pebbles, others clayey-limestone, or even both within the same plot. These are for the majority of the regional grape varieties (Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault, Sauvignon, Chardonnay...), there is even a plot, the one from which we produce our great vintage, at its top we can see the sea when we work on it.

Our story

Until 2014, the estate was operated in a cooperative cellar by Ellen Fournel, Emilien's father. When he decided to settle down with his wife Ophelia, they chose to make their own vintages. For this reason, he rehabilitated the old winegrower's house owned by Edmond the grandfather. Located in the heart of the village, they are timidly starting to create their first red, Epopée. The following year we will follow the other vintages, one more red, one more white and one rosé, all with a vintage name starting with E because in the Fournel family, all men, for generations, have had a first name that begins with E. And among winegrowers, the vintages are a little like our children!

Other little stories

For us as winegrowers, it is not something that can be explained, it is a way of life that goes without saying. A logical continuation in the choices we have made. What was most important for us was to value the heritage that has been passed on to us, while at the same time making history. To be able to reconcile what we are in what has been there for a long time. Our personality can be seen in our wines, the love of the terroir, the profession, the audacity in our Epopée red wine. The modernity, the youth of our generation in our mischievous red. Respect for our history, the clan aspect specific to winegrowers, in our rosé Edmond le Démon. The relationship between Ophelia and Emilian, the adventure of a lifetime that this project represents in our white Eternam. And the difference we cultivate, the departure from the beaten track, in our autumn harvest Esperluette.

Between us, in the world of wine it is common knowledge to have the appropriate vocabulary and to "know" yourself in wine. At the Emilian Chai, what matters to us above all is that the person we have opposite loves wine. Not necessarily ours, but the lexicon, the tasting does not matter to us, only the pleasure felt by sharing it counts in our eyes. This is what makes us different from other winegrowers.
