Maison Miquel includes Château Cazal Viel, Laurent Miquel wines and Domaine Les Auzines. The Maison Miquel has been known for its know-how for 8 generations in the production of wines from noble grape varieties on different terroirs of the Languedoc. It is particularly well known for its great whites made from the Viognier grape variety and bearing the signature of the winemaker. I am convinced that the protection of the environment, as well as the controlled use of natural resources, are essential components of the quality of its wines. This approach is not a constraint for me, but an opportunity to offer my children what the 8 generations of winegrowers have succeeded in passing on to us up to now. In fact, grassing is encouraged, in order to limit erosion and soil pollution by the use of phytopersistent products. Prophylactic measures have been put in place so that treatments are only applied when absolutely necessary.

Our story

Like my father Henri, I did not always want to be a winemaker and had a first professional life before returning to my roots, to my land. After graduating from the UTC in Compiègne, I went on to do a Masters in Quality Engineering at Leeds University. My first job was in the automotive industry, at Nissan in Newcastle, where I worked as a quality engineer for two years. But I missed the land and my passion for wine quickly brought me back to my Languedoc origins. At the age of 23, I went back to school to study oenology in Montpellier. At the same time, I worked with my father and acquired the necessary know-how and experience to start making my own wines. My first vintage was born in 1996, more than two centuries after the beginnings of its ancestors at Cazal Viel.

Other little stories

The passion for wine comes from my father who since childhood introduced me to the art of wine. This passion for grape varieties has been passed down from father to son: syrah, viognier is now Albarino. The 150 ha of vines of the house are cultivated in a sustainable way. The work is done on a daily basis to let the vines express themselves fully.

I like new challenges, writing what has not yet been imagined, challenging preconceived ideas about what viticulture should be today, demonstrating the capacity of its lands to produce great wines. I love boldness, and challenge myself again by becoming the first winegrower to plant albarino in France, at Château les Auzines in Corbières, a new acquisition of the Laurent Miquel House. The location of this grape variety differentiates us from neighbouring estates, as do our exceptional great white wines.
