Domaine Philippe Gilbert
Located in Menetou-Salon, Domaine Philippe Gilbert is part of a long family tradition in winemaking, as the Gilbert family has been involved in viticulture since the 18th century. Today, the estate is run by Philippe Gilbert, who oversees a vineyard of approximately 29 hectares.
The vineyards are situated on hillsides built upon Kimmeridgian sedimentary soils, composed of marl, clay, and limestone. The vineyard is planted primarily with Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, the appellation’s signature grape varieties, which are cultivated with a constant focus on balance and clarity.
The estate transitioned to organic farming and then to biodynamic farming between 2005 and 2007, and is now Biodyvin-certified. This approach involves meticulous vineyard management, focused on soil vitality and close observation of the vines. The winemaking process aims to respect the natural rhythm of the wines, with extended aging—about one year for whites and up to two years for reds—to promote slow and steady development.
The estate’s wines are distinguished by their balance, precision, and ability to faithfully reflect the terroirs of Menetou-Salon. The work of Domaine Philippe Gilbert as a whole offers a rigorous and discerning interpretation of the appellation, grounded in biodynamics, time, and a nuanced understanding of the Loire Valley’s grape varieties and soils.
