Saumur

Wines from the Saumur wine region are primarily made from Chenin (80%), but may also include other grape varieties such as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pineau d’Aunis. Scattered in small clusters, the Saumur vineyards are planted on tuffeau limestone soils. The climate of the terroir is temperate, with an oceanic influence. These wines are particularly renowned, regardless of their type. Red, white, and rosé wines are produced here, as well as sparkling wines. They all share a common trait: their suppleness, finesse, and freshness. The Saumur subregion covers 1,100 hectares with an annual production of 69,000 hectoliters. Visually, Saumur white wines boast a remarkable pale yellow color with greenish highlights. The nose blends mineral aromas with notes of white flowers and linden. On the palate, the wine refreshes the taste buds. The red wines have a beautiful ruby color with hints of black cherry. The nose develops aromas of red fruits (raspberry) and violet, with hints of spice. When mature, the wine reveals aromatic hints of bell pepper. On the palate, its roundness delights the palate thanks to its well-integrated tannins. These wines have an aging potential of 5 years. The red pairs well with dishes such as meats (red and white) and poultry, while the white is better suited to shellfish, fish, and seafood.
