How do you choose a red wine based on your tastes?

How to Choose a Red Wine Based on Your Tastes: A Guide to Making the Right Choice Every Time

Choosing a red wine isn't always easy. Between grape varieties, regions, appellations, and all the advice you hear here and there, it's easy to get confused.

However, there is no such thing as the "best" red wine. The right choice is, above all, the one that suits your tastes.

Whether you prefer light, fruity wines or full-bodied reds, here are a few simple tips to help you find the right bottle for you.

1. Identify the style of wine you like

Before looking at the label, just ask yourself what kind of red wine you enjoy drinking the most.

If you like smooth, fresh, and fruity wines, look for appellations like Beaujolais or certain Pinot Noirs.

On the other hand, if you're looking for full-bodied wines with more structure and pronounced tannins, appellations such as Cahors, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, or Madiran will better suit your tastes.

2. Learn to recognize the main grape varieties

Grape varieties often provide a good indication of a wine's style.

Pinot Noir, the iconic grape of Burgundy, generally produces elegant and delicate wines.

Merlot adds roundness and richness, while Cabernet Sauvignon—which is very common in Bordeaux—produces wines that are more structured and tannic.

The Syrah develops spicy and dark fruit notes, while the Gamay charms with its crisp and very fruity character.

Over time, you'll quickly learn which grape varieties best suit your preferences.

3. Tannins have a significant impact on the enjoyment of wine

Tannins are responsible for that slight drying sensation you sometimes feel in your mouth.

If you're just starting out or enjoy easy-to-drink wines, look for wines with soft tannins.

If you enjoy wines with character, you might want to try some of the more full-bodied and tannic vintages.

There's no right or wrong choice—it all depends on your personal taste.

4. Don't rely solely on the region

We often hear people say, "I like Bordeaux wines" or "I prefer Burgundy wines. "

In fact, each region produces a wide variety of styles.

A Bordeaux can range from smooth to very full-bodied, just as a Burgundy can offer very different profiles depending on the estate or appellation.

The region is a good starting point, but it's not enough on its own to choose a wine.

5. Think about the meal

Context also plays an important role.

A light wine pairs perfectly with poultry or a charcuterie platter, while a more full-bodied wine will bring out the best in grilled meat or a stew.

Choosing a wine to pair with a meal is often the key to success.

6. Trust your taste

Tasting notes are valuable clues.

If you see descriptions like "fruity," "rich," "elegant," or "smooth," there's a good chance the wine is easy to enjoy.

Conversely, terms such as "powerful," "full-bodied," or "tannic" generally indicate a more intense wine.

Little by little, you'll learn to recognize the vocabulary that relates to what you truly love.

7. Dare to discover new winemakers

The major appellations naturally attract attention, but many lesser-known wineries produce remarkable wines.

By buying directly from producers, you can discover authentic red wines that often offer excellent value for the price.
