15 Questions to Ask During a Winery Visit

Meeting a winemaker might seem like no big deal. But your enjoyment and theirs are closely linked, so it’s best to have a few questions in mind before you arrive at the winery.

In the vineyards

Vineyards: places that are both magnificent and complex. This is your chance to take a deep breath and appreciate the beauty of these crops. Often spread out over several acres, they are undoubtedly a feast for the eyes. As you stroll through them, you might ask:

  • How large is the estate?
  • What grape varieties are grown?
  • What are the yields per hectare?
  • How many grape pickers come each year to help with the harvest?
  • What is the planting density?
  • What type of soil is it?

In the wine cellars

The cellars: where it all happens. Depending on the estate, you’ll find fermentation tanks and/or the aging cellars there. Not for the faint of nose! Just like in breweries or whiskey distilleries, the smells are strong due to the reaction between bacteria and the grapes. Despite this, they are magnificent places, such as the cellars of the legendary Château de Meursault (Burgundy) or the magnificent Château d’Yquem (Sauternes). Don’t forget to ask:

  • What is the capacity of the tanks?
  • Are any additives used during winemaking?
  • How can you control the alcohol content of wine during the winemaking process?
  • How many barrels are there?
  • Are they oak barrels? Or stainless steel?
  • How many months does this vintage remain in the barrel?
  • What impact does stainless steel barrel/tank aging have on wines? And on the tasting experience?

At the tasting cellar

The wine cellar: for a unique opportunity to connect with the winemaker. This is where the winemaker invites you to taste the fruits of their labor. It’s worth noting that the process from vine to bottle can sometimes take more than two years, so the winemaker is always happy to share their wine with visitors. Whether you’re a casual wine lover or a connoisseur, feel free to ask:

  • Which vintage is most influenced by the terroir? (soil, climate, etc.)
  • Which one is your favorite, and why?

By asking these questions, you’ll become an expert on the vineyard and what the winemaker does all day. Beyond demonstrating your knowledge of the subject, these questions will also show the winemaker that you have a genuine interest in their world—guaranteeing a successful visit!
